Combined Rocket House Open and  HSAC Bumphrey Shield match report – Salthouse 28/12/08

By Tony Chidwick & Dene Conway

As ever, the weather continued its relentless assault on the match scene.

This time it was a freezing Easterly taking the wind chill factor to well below zero.

There’s an old saying about Easterlies and your fishing prospects, and though both Tony Chidwick (peg 14) and Tony Thomas (peg15) had fish on their first cast, (usually the kiss of death anyway!!) the old adage was once again set to prove true.

In fact T.T’S first cast double shot of a small dab and a magnificent 1lb 4oz Flounder would prove to be enough to do the damage early on.

From there on, most anglers struggled to record even a single fish with several blanking.

T.T added another couple of dab to his tally and Ricky Hayward (peg 13) took the second place spot with a few dab and a late double shot of two small Flounder.

The only round fish of the entire match was a ‘pin’ Whiting that fell to Peter Loke.

Keith Morley ‘s two Dab were sufficient to see him take the third spot, beating Tony Chidwick out of the places by 3cm.

In the HSAC match it was down to single fish to sort out the top four places.

T.T’s 37cm Flounder gave him top slot with Dene Conway’s 25cm Dab putting him in second.

Next came Tony Chidwick in third with a 24cm Dab, followed by Sam Attew with one of 23cm.

Norfolk Norfolk evening League – Weybourne – Monday 22nd December

Posted by admin - 26/12/08 at 07:12 am

A quiet night of no wind with “balmy” temperatures on an ebbing tide gave us all some hope of a real haul at last. However, the quirks of nature dented that expectation giving us high pressure and a neap tide with next to no movement. Although the rafts of stonking whiting are still eluding us, the usual good turn out of 10 did manage 141 fish which was 59 more than last match.

With a “lucky” codling, first thought to be a pout, Tony “last cast” Thomas took the honours with 7lb 13oz from 20 fish. At last the 2008 champion, Kevin “dogman” Kibblewhite, finds some form albeit from an end peg to take 2nd spot with 6lb 2 2/3oz from 19 fish. Closely followed by that man again, Ricky “no cley man” Hayward with 6lb 1 1/3oz from 20 fish now with 5 podium finishes in 6 matches and conveniently forgetting about that blank.

With podium placings coming from both ends and the middle it appears it is a matter of finding the fish to score in our matches. Both close in and distance is catching so there is no real pattern to where to fish and they will switch off without warning but this is the intriging part about this sea fishing game!!! With hordes of pleasurers about over the festive season its back to Muckleburgh and Kelling behind the masts for next match. Let’s hope the north easterlies stay away and the big flood tide brings in those stonking whiting!!!

North Norfolk Monday Night League Weybourne – Monday 15th December

Posted by admin - 26/12/08 at 06:12 am

After the stonking whiting catches of the previous day everyone was in expectation particularly fishing over the top and on a night of no wind, perfect conditions!!!  Unfortunately, the fish were not having none of this and the bulk of those quality specimens just decided to stay away.  The usual turnout of 10 managed just 82 fish which happened to be 76 more than the last poor match.

Finding his form at last with dabs of all shapes and sizes, Dennis “peeler” Hunn took top spot with 4lb from 15 fish. Tying for second place was Ricky “no cley man” Hayward with 3lb 12oz from 12 fish and Richard “no buddy” Ives with 10 fish. Cavin “not too far” Reed found the 3rd heaviest round to date, a codling of 1lb 8 2/3oz but could only manage 5th place.

Another poor performance from our 2008 champion and this year’s title looks as though it may elude him but with 6 matches left there is still time for him to pull it out of the bag. Richard is now a clear leader by 4 points but watch out for Ricky when he drops his “blank” match!!! With next match on the ebb and neap tide at Weybourne we will see if all the theories about the ebb at Weybourne are true!!!
