North Norfolk Evening League – Match 10

Salthouse – Monday 26th January

With the pleasurers having a bash at Weybourne it was off to Salthouse for a change for our last league match. Perfect conditions for those rod rattling bites, no real wind, flatish calm and top the tide to make it comfortable on a flat shingle bank. Plus that famous local digger and match tactician was heard to say “we’re going to bag up on dabs tonight” funny though, the same was heard the previous night and yes! it was the same result. Anyway, the usual 8 did manage 53 fish which was at least 17 more than last match!!!

Once again Peter “orange-van-man” Simmons (peg 3) showed his credentials by taking top spot at a new venue with 2lb 5 1/3oz from 13 fish. Next place was taken by Dene “geordieman” Conway (2) with 1lb 14 1/3oz from 8 fish, demonstrating the low order pegs were the favoured ones. Scrapping into the final podium slot by the length of a minature dab was Richard “fish forecaster” Ives (5) with 1lb 6 1/3oz from 6 fish.

Well that’s it for another year and congratulations to Peter for showing us the way in his rookie year taking the title with 117 points dropping only 3 points in the 6 matches that counted. Next came Ricky on 112 points which was achieved without a win, good consistancy! followed by Tony on 110 points. With last year’s champion going home in disgust after another failure we are all wondering and maybe hoping that this bug will strike this year’s champion next season. Pity the cold weather, easterlies and high pressure messed things up this year but by the time November comes round we’ll all have forgotten about this. We’ll try and sort out venues and dates next season to address this lack of fish. Let’s hope the predictions for our last match under the cliffs do not materialise and those codling really do show … tight lines …!!!

21 members arrived to fish this one, with a light offshore breeze and some warm sunshine, it was almost like Spring, however as soon as it went dark the wind found it`s teeth and reminded us how cold it can get!

Dabs and Rockling started to appear on the first few casts, but as the tide dropped so did the catch rate. The only other species caught were a couple of flounders and 1 codling.

Match winner was Terry Jones with a codling of 1.79 kgs. ( 3-15-00 lbs ) plus a dab and a rockling for 1.99 kgs. 2nd was Dave Mitchell with 7 dabs for 1.29, joint 3rd Gwyn Andrews with 4 dabs and a rockling, and Steve Parry with 5 dabs for 0.99 each. Shaun Rodenhurst took 5th with 4 dabs and 3 rockling for 0.98 and Dave Lunt 6th with a flounder and a dab for 0.76.

Sue Price took the ladies prize with 2 rockling for 0.17, and Stephen Higginson the junior prize with one for 0.07. Top team were Terry and Kev with 66 points and that codling was obviously the heaviest fish.

The sections next match is a Dee estuary rover on Sunday 8th February. Booking in is at the Smugglers Inn carpark at Talacre before 12-30, fishing 13-30 until 17-30. New members are welcome.

North Norfolk Evening League – Match 9

Kelling – Monday 19th January

With a light South Westerly and a calm sea we all thought that those stonking whiting would show, wrong!!!. However, fishing bottom up on a small tide is just hopeless with no real tide to bring the fish in and this was just the case. With no serious fish appearing the usual band of 8 minus last year’s champion managed just 36 fish which was 58 less than last match.

Doing the business at last was a previous year’s champion Cavin “not too far” Reed (peg 2) with 2lb 3 1/3oz from 8 fish for his first top spot of this campaign. Following very closely was Ricky “no cley man” Hayward (7) with 2lb 2 2/3oz for his 6th podium finish but no top spot. Final podium place went to that man again Peter “orange-van-man” Simmons (6) with 1lb 11 1/3oz from 6 fish. With just one league match left it looks as though it is Peter’s title with 114 points closely followed by Ricky 112 who can only tie for the title. Currently 3rd is Tony 110 who can also only tie for the title.

Den again is slowly improving and he will probably shortly be moved to the Coleman Hospital for rehab. Well the season is slowly drawing to a close and the the great expectations of the good catches at the start has change to real frustration at the end although the cold weather and North/East winds haven’t helped. As discussed our last pools match is being moved to Friday 30th January under the cliffs at Weybourne to see if we can tempt a few codling!!!
